How to get over your fear of public speaking… Hold a snake of course?!

How to get over your fear of public speaking… Hold a snake of course?!

Dr. Nick Fuhrman encourages instructors, teachers, and facilitators to recognize the profound personal impact that we can have on others both in the following TEDx recorded March 2018 at the University of Athens, GA

Dr. Nick Fuhrman is an associate professor of environmental education in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication. Also known as “Ranger Nick,” he teaches graduate courses in educational program development and data analysis and undergraduate courses in environmental education and teaching methods.

I found this video when I was considering what qualities teachers have had that influenced my life.

What caught my attention in Dr. Nick’s video was his passion and advice on embracing mistakes, making them into teachable moments. He appreciates learners from diverse backgrounds, and the way he relays feedback is creative and fun.

The fourth characteristic; Great teachers “evaluate themselves” struck a chord with me because I am from an operations management background and continuous improvement has been entrenched in my cognitive process.

While at Amazon I was taught that if the learner hasn’t learned, then the teacher hasn’t taught.

So when I notice a learner struggled to understand an idea I ask myself: What can I tweak or change about the learning experience to help the learner understand? Do I need to choose another type of activity to help them reach that aha moment? How was the experience different for learners that understood? Could a class discussion help?
