Traditional Justice vs Cosmic Justice
I came across a really important video on the AfterSkool channel on Youtube.
I strongly believe in Traditional Justice, yet I see the world around me embracing Cosmic Justice. I am a Learning and Development professional that works for a public sector organization. Helping people discover their true potential is why I get up in the morning.
My best day is when an individual reaches out to me because they what to learn skills and tools but need assistance finding the path to get there. I will guide them through several options and they choose what works for them and their life. These people all have something in common that many others don’t… they are honest with themselves, willing to put in the effort to remove barriers to achieve their goals, and seek open honest feedback.
I tell them the truth because I want to help them achieve their goal. If I have helped the Learner identify a path that leads to the future that they are working towards then I am successful.
Giving a less qualified person an advantage over another indivdual that is more qualified becuase they are deemed to be from a disadvantage demographic is not fair. I find it very difficult to understand people that believe in “Cosmic Justice” for two reasons.
- Who gave the people that call for Cosmic Justice the authority to decide and categorize other people as disadvantaged?
- Does the person deemed “Disadvantaged” appreciate that title. Do they agree with it. Does labeling a person “disadvantaged” marginalize them in a similar way that racism does?
I personally wouldn’t want to receive a promotion over someone that is more qualified than I am because I am gay and Cosmic Justice has deemed me to be “disadvantaged.”
“Oh, He’s gay, he’s disadvantaged because historically all the other directors have been heterosexual. We’ll give him the promotion over John Smith even though John has been acting in the director position for over a year now since so-and-so went on stress leave, and show the world that we are a diverse and equitable organization.”
How absurd does that sound when you substitute gay and heterosexual into the scenerio instead of African American or Indigenous as the disadvantaged compared to caucasian.
I grew up as a closetted gay caucasian man for the first 20 years of my life. A boy 5 years my elder was attacked walking home one day and had a brick thrown at his head. The people that did this left him to die on the side of the road. That was the community I grew up in. I came from a low-income household. None of my parents or extended family had gone to college. My mom was the first teenaged mom in our community when she had my older brother at 17 and she had to leave highschool without graduating because she embarassed the faculty of the highschool she attended.
In todays world I would be considered disadvantaged. I never felt that way, and the whole world around me didn’t label me as such. That was life it was the hand I was given, and I have a Business Operations Management diploma a Bachelor Degree of Business Administration, a government job, and family that love and care about me.
I wonder how I would be now if I had been told by the world around me that I should be given some kind of head-start because I am disadvantaged. I don’t think I would appreciate what I have accomplished on my own, and would likely play the disadvantaged victim card whenever I heard something negative about myself. Instead of acknowledging my skills gap, rededicating myself to perservere, and building up a resilience, and self confidence when I overcome the set-back.
Yet there are organizations, coucils, & policy makers out there that are willing to lower the minimum scholastic requirements for adminssion into post secondary institutions, or through equity and inclusion are selecting army recruits that may not meet the same rigorous requirements of generations past over those individuals that do.
Think about this, Would you want to be in a submarine with another sub-mariner that only passed their psych evaluation because the minimum requirements were lowered?
All to appease those people that believe in Cosmic Justice, but are not on the submarine with you when buddy goes into melt-down. Scary right? Do you disagree?
