Jack Mezirow (1923-2014)

1978: Mezirow introduced the concept of transformative learning, which focused on the process of critically reflecting on and reconstructing one’s beliefs and assumptions.

Mezirow created a 10-step process of Transformative Learning, It starts with a “disorienting dilemma” that causes self examination followed by critically assessing the assumptions one had prior to the dilemma.

Next they recognize that their discontent is shared by others, and planning a course of action is then initiated.

Finally his concept finishes with the Learner acquiring knowledge and skills to implement the plan they have developed, trying out new roles to build competence and self-confidence and reintegrating the new perspective into one’s life.
